Private communities

A space that belongs to your community

Private, invite-only, and yours β€” with events people are reminded about, things changing hands, services somebody vouches for, and an assistant that answers from what your own community posted.

What a private community is

It is the treasurer chasing the same four people for subs. The neighbour who owns a drill and would happily lend it. The fixture list that lives in one person’s head. The family who moved in last month and does not know who to ask about anything.

All of that already exists in your group. What it does not have is anywhere to live β€” so it scrolls past, and the person who needed it was not looking that day.

Who runs one

Anyone holding a group together and repeating themselves to keep it that way.

Schools

Notices that reach every family, the calendar in one place, and a uniform exchange that runs itself.

The Connected School Programme β†’

Societies and clubs

Fixtures, committee notices and subs β€” instead of the secretary repeating themselves in three places.

Neighbourhoods

The drill somebody will lend you, the plumber worth calling, the street party nobody has organised yet.

Faith and cultural groups

Festival dates, volunteers, and the newcomer who has just arrived and does not know anyone.

Workplaces and alumni

A space that is yours rather than the company chat, and outlasts whoever set it up.

How it runs

Two steps belong to you. The rest happens on its own.

  1. You

    You open the space

Name it and it exists β€” private, invite-only, with two codes waiting. There is nothing to install and nothing to migrate.

    New
  2. You

    You share a code

One code for the people helping you run it, another for everyone else. What someone can do is decided by which one they scanned β€” so keep the first one close.

  3. Members

    People join by scanning it

No account to approve, no list to maintain, nobody wandering in. They are in the space and can see what is in it.

  4. Members

It fills up on its own

Events people are reminded about, things changing hands, services somebody vouches for, and an assistant that answers from what your community posted β€” in whatever language they ask in.

  5. You

    You can charge to join

Set a joining fee and members pay it once for a year. Leave it empty and the whole thing is free, which is how most communities run.

    €20/ year
    Optional

If you want to charge

Some communities have costs β€” a pitch to hire, a hall to book, a festival to put on. You can set a joining fee and members pay it once, for a year. Most communities set nothing at all, and nothing is exactly what that costs.

Where there is a fee, Sahayy keeps half of it and the rest is transferred to your own Stripe account. Where there is not, Sahayy takes nothing. The people helping you run the community always join free.

You will need a Stripe account before anyone can pay β€” setting one up is part of the flow, and nothing is charged until it is done.

Before you ask

How long does it take to start?

Minutes. Name it and you have two codes to send out. Nothing to install, nothing to procure.

What do we have to move across?

Nothing. You are not migrating a member list β€” you are opening a space and sharing a code. The existing group can carry on until people stop using it.

Who can see what we post?

Only the people you invited. The space is private and invite-only, it is not indexed by search engines, and an admin can remove a member or take a post down.

What does it cost?

Nothing to create, and nothing to join. A fee only exists if you choose to set one.

Does everyone need the app?

No. It works in a browser; the app is for people who want notifications. Joining is scanning a code either way.

Can we start small?

Yes, and most should. Open it, give the code to a dozen people, and see whether they use it before announcing it to everyone.

Start with a dozen people

Open it, send the code to the few who always turn up, and see what they do with it before you tell everyone else.
